Celebrate Walla Walla is one of the first big wine events we attended after moving to Oregon.  And we still try to go every year.  People come from all over the country.  In fact there is a dude from Tennessee every year who knows Walla Walla like the back of his hand.  Each year focuses on Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, or Syrah.  This June 13 – 15 will be Celebrate Walla Walla Cabernet Sauvignon.

Jade went on KGW to share a sneak peak of some Walla Walla Cabernet Sauvignon and share details of the event.  Check out the video and scroll down for more info

Celebrate Walla Walla Cabernet Sauvignon Events

The World of Cabernet Sauvignon Kick-Off in the historic Gesa Power House Theatre – This is geeky and total fun.  Everyone LOVES it.

Vintage Pour at Tranche – This is my fave because you don’t always get to compare older vintages at your house

Wine Panel Presentations at the Marcus Whitman Hotel – A regional comparison of Cabernet Sauvignon from Walla Walla, Napa, and Italy.

Cabernet Sauvignon Grand Tasting at Waterbrook Winery – All the Cabernets.  All. Of. Them.

Collaborative Winemaker Dinner Series – My other fave because, well food and wine, plus you get to be out and about at the wineries.

Celebrate Walla Walla Cabernet Sauvignon Wines

There are 60+ wineries pouring this year in fact you can see them all at this link to list of participating wineries so how did we choose 3 to bring on KGW.  These 3 will be poured at the Wine Panel Presentation.  If you attend you will get to taste them alongside comparisons from Napa and Italy and hear first hand the winemakers’ impressions.  Here’s what we thought:

2016 Doubleback Walla Walla Valley Cabernet Sauvignon ~$98

Intense flavors of red and dark fruits, spice, and vanilla. Earthiness, smokiness and a bit of that green pepper herbacousness we love on Cabernet Sauvignon.  Bright acidity with soft tannin.

2014 Aluve Walla Walla Valley Menozzi Vineyard Estate Cabernet Sauvignon ~$52

Mountain fruit from the foothills of the Blues gives grippy tannin, earthy flavors, sweet herbs, vanilla, blueberry, and cola.

2015 Abeja Walla Walla Valley Heather Hill Vineyard Cabernet Sauvignon ~$68 mailing list only

Complex with notes of black cherry, cassis, dark raspberries, and undertone of vegetal notes – rhubarb and olive – spicy sweet cinnamon, earthy minerality, velvety tannins, and notes of bitter chocolate on the finish.

Celebrate Walla Walla Cabernet Sauvignon Tickets and Details

You can order tickets here plus get info on lodging and see which wineries are pouring at each event.  One of the cool things about Celebrate Walla Walla is you don’t have to get tickets to every event – but most people don’t want to miss anything.  Hope to see you there.  Please come say hi if you spot me.

I am so excited our #winepw group is featuring Biodynamic Wines from Willamette Valley. To get us in the mood a little I thought I would share this video clip about Oregon Biodynamic wines on KGW.

Biodynamic wines can be a confusing term.  For some clarification and hints for how to know if a wine is Biodynamic please see Biodynamic Wines for Earth Day.  If you’d rather get right into the food and wine pairings then let’s go.

We’ve all been cooking and sipping and recipe testing to bring you carefully created pairing suggestions for these handcrafted wines.  Please check out these posts and join us on Twitter from 8am -9am PT Saturday May 11 to discuss.  Just follow #winepw.

For my pairing I made Thai Curry Rockfish with Montinore Estate 2016 Gewurztraminer Reserve from Willamette Valley.  This was a triple threat of a special treat.

The Winery: Montinore Estate

Montinore Estate has effected the world of Biodynamic wines in a big way – literally. In fact, Demeter USA, the certifying agency for Biodynamic farming, recently reported that Montinore Estate is the country’s largest producer of certified estate wines made from Biodynamic grapes. This is because of the leadership of Rudy Marchesi, president and chief viticulturist at Montinore Estate. Many people think Biodynamic farming methods are only feasible on small farms.  Marchesi turned that theory on its ear when he successfully converted the 240 estate at Montinore to Biodynamic.

Marchesi does not just serve as an example of what can be accomplished, he creates opportunities to share knowledge and provide education.  Marchesi has hosted many Biodynamic educational events over the years including a pre-conference workshop at last year’s Biodynamic Association conference. Most recently, Rudy was one of nine growers- and the only American- asked to join the International Biodynamic Viticulture Group, that will be promoting Biodynamic viticulture and winemaking education around the globe, including creating an international web-based forum for Biodynamic winegrowers.  Marchesi is also the Chairman of the Board of Directors of Demeter USA.

I had the privilege of interviewing Marchesi last year when he was named Oregon Wine Press Person of the Year.  For more details about his contributions please see my interview with Rudy Marchesi here.

The Wine: Montinore Estate 2016 Gewurtzraminer Reserve, Willamette Valley

We kind of loved this Gewurztraminer (sponsored sample).  To me this grape can be hard to get right.  They are usually way fun to smell but sometimes the flavors can be overwhelming and they can feel heavy on the palate.  But this one was FABULOUS!  Lots of spice – white pepper, coriander, fresh ginger – with the fresh aromas of wildflowers and roses, sweet peach and nectarine, and finally blood orange oil.  It screamed for Thai food and then it screamed to accompany our neighborhood walk to see the spring flowers.

The Dish: Thai Curry Rockfish

There aren’t very many food products I use from a jar.  But I make a few exceptions and these can really save me on a busy weeknight.  Here is one of my favorite timesavers: Thai Green Curry Simmer Sauce from Trader Joe’s.  I understand all of the words in the ingredients label. Actual edible ingredients like coconut milk, lemon grass, Kaffir lime peel, coriander etc.

Thai Green Curry Simmer Sauce

All you need for a quick meal that won’t heat up the kitchen is some fresh veg, local fish, and rice or zoodles.

BTW did you know Oregon is just about as “green” as you think it is?  We don’t get our reputation for organic kale eating and chicken dossiers  for nothin’. The stat below isn’t JUST about Biodynamic winemaking but we are proud of the many ways our farmers are good stewards of the land.

The daffodils are blooming, the cherry blossoms are magnificent, and the tulips dot the flowerbeds with the first colors of the year.   Even the farmer’s markets are beginning to open and our cravings for fresh crunchy flavors are kicking into high gear.  With that our wine preferences shift so I bring you a bouquet of wines for spring.  Each one reflective of the flowers popping up around us and the fresh flavors in our spring dishes.

Wines for Spring

I believe you can drink any wine you want any time of year. But there are certain styles I tend to crave with the season.  Check out the suggestions I shared on KGW 4 o’clock news and keep reading for more detailed info.

Erath 2018 Oregon Rose of  Pinot Noir

Rose is a great way to launch into the new season.  What I love about this rose of Pinot Noir from Erath is how beautifully it goes with food. It is finally the time of year when a well made salad can be a meal.  Think fresh greens with smoked salmon, goat cheese, and citrus or  strawberries, herbed chicken, and candied walnuts.  We paired with bagel and lox – that’s right if you think wine doesn’t go with breakfast, you are doing breakfast wrong.  Elegantly scented with strawberry, melon, stone fruit and florals this rose is the perfect accompaniment to spring meals.  You can find it just about anywhere fine wines are sold ~ $14

Erath Oregon Rose of Pinot Noir

Maryhill Winery 2018 Otis Vineyard  Proprietor’s Reserve Albarino

Fresh flowers, light melon, a little white peach and citrus, Maryhill Winery delivers the perfect wine for spring with this gorgeous Albarino.  I can’t think of a better place to sip this Albarino than at Maryhill’s newest tasting room on the Vancouver USA water front – like on the patio, right on the shores of the Columbia River. Albarino ~$22 – sold where fine wines are sold.

Expect all of the music, menus, upcoming special events, and fabulous wines Maryhill is known to deliver.

Vancouver Waterfront Maryhill

Grand Opening events are this weekend:

  • Saturday, April 13, 2019: Public Grand Opening Celebration, 11 a.m.–9 p.m., music by Sundae + Mr. Goessl, 4 p.m.–8 p.m.
  • Sunday, April 14, 2019: Public Grand Opening Celebration, 11 a.m.–9 p.m., music by Jessie Marquez, 2 p.m.–5 p.m.
  • Regular Hours 11 a – 9 p Daily

Borealis from Montinore Estate

This is pure springtime in a glass. Like a field of wildflowers and sweet grass with white peach and light pineapple – so very aromatic.  A blend of some of the prettiest scented grapes – Muller Thurgau, Riesling, Gewurztraminer, and Pinot Gris.  Borealis is named for these “Northern Whites” classic to Alsace. (Get it?  Like “Northern Lights”) Full bodied and lush, yet crisp, with a hint of sweetness. It is perfect for sipping on a springtime evening and goes great with food. We had it with spicy Indian and it was perfect.  Plus it is organic.  Available in many states where fine wines are sold ~$16

Does it seem like winter will never end? Last week there was a hail storm while the sun was shining!  Yesterday surprise snow! Need some wines to get you through the winter?  Some wines for winter meals?

Jade went on KGW for just this topic.  Wines for Winter Meals.  Or let’s face it  Wines for long winter nights. Case in point the walk from the car to the studio was blustery and freezing and it snowed overnight!

Watch the clip and keep reading for more details.

Wines for Winter Meals

2015 Big John Reserve Cabernet Sauvignon from H/H Estates Coyote Canyon Vineyard in Horse Heaven Hills (Prosser WA)  $42 – Actually named for a great big prize winning bull, from back when the family raised cattle instead of grapes. This is  big Cab Sauv you want with your steak or pot roast. Tart red fruit, evergreen notes, big structure Note 2015 was tasted, 2013 pictured belowSee our review of the 2010 H/H Estates Big John

2015 Idiot’s Grace Cabernet Franc from Columbia Gorge  $32 – Ahh the other Cab… Cabernet Franc is Cabernet Sauvignon’s daddy so to speak and is one of my favorite grapes from one of my favorite wineries in the Columbia Gorge. I want this with a lamb and veggie stew because it has so many complex layers.  Savory with the vegetal notes expected from Cab Franc, a burst of Marionberry, and a finish of black pepper and orange oil.

Idiot's Grace Cab Franc 2015

And finally from one of my all time favorite Horse Heaven Hills wineries … I like every bottle I’ve tried from Alexandria Nicole.

2015 Alexandria Nicole Cellars Block 7 Syrah from Destiny Ridge Vineyards in Horse Heaven Hills  (Prosser WA) $28–  This is the wine that will get you through the winter.  Wild and luxurious it is like purple velvet.  Pair with pork or duck with a berry compote or even a decadent grilled cheese. $28 (note 2011 pictured)

I know my readers don’t want to hear about my birthday.  Since I celebrate it all month long my friends may be tired of hearing about it.  But for part of my Birthday Month celebration Mark and I attended a Beaujolais wine event at the Heathman in Portland.

Beaujolais Nouveau Event

This picture should give you some idea of how fun it was…

Drinking Beaujolais Wine

Think crab legs, shrimp towers, oysters, sweetbreads, carving stations, fancy dresses, and of course Beaujolais.

Beaujolais Carving Station

Beaujolais Partygoers

Shrimp Tower

Now if you don’t really know what Beaujolais is… like so many European wine terms it is a place name. That place is in the southern part of Burgundy in France. The red grape grown is Gamay.

Pairing Beaujolais or Gamay Wine

The main point I want you to zone in on is food pairings.  Did you notice how many seafood options and other foods were paired with a red grape?  Gamay is very versatile. And Thanksgiving is upon us.  If you need a wine that will work with a spread as varied as your family members, the Gamay grape is a great way to go.

Buying Beaujolais or Gamay Wine

When US winemakers bottle Gamay it will say the name of the grape on the label.  When Beaujolais winemakers bottle it, the label will say Beaujolais, Beaujolais Nouveau, Beaujolais Villages, or one of 10 villages (or crus) – (St-Amour, Juliénas, Chénas, Moulin-a-Vent, Fleurie, Chiroubles, Morgon, Régnié, Brouilly, or Côte de Brouilly)  For more details see Meet My Sext Beau

Wines that say Beaujolais Nouveau are very light in color and tannin and usually very fruity.  You can read more about them here Le Beaujolais Nouveau est Arrive They are not my favorite version of the Gamay grape. But there are many lovely affordable French Beaujolais and US Gamay wines.

Here are a couple faves from Oregon if you are local and can get your hands on one.

Willakenzie Estate 2015 Estate Grown Gamay Noir from Yamhill-Carlton in Willamette Valley ~$35

With enough oomph to add another layer to your dining experience without overwhelming.  Rich ripe black fruits, earthy floral black tea notes, and an invigorating spicy black pepper bite.

Willakenzie-EstateGrown-Gamay-Noir

Anne Amie Vineyards 2016 Twelve Oaks Estate Gamay Noir from Chehalem Mountain in Willamette Valley

Pretty red strawberry and raspberry fruits with earthy undertones, and dark notes of tobacco and tea.

We’re coming up on International Cabernet Day y’all, officially the Thursday before Labor Day.  Yes it is a total hashtag holiday, but hey it comes with wine instead of a greeting card, so I’m in.

I love Cabernet Sauvignon from Washington. If you aren’t buying Washington Cabernet Sauvignon you are missing out on great price points for all styles.

Here I am on KGW Portland Today with 3 Cabs under $30.  Keep reading for more details.

I chose these Washington Cabernet Sauvignons because:

  1. It is almost Labor Day. I need delicious friendly wines I can enjoy at a BBQ
  2. Washington is my neighbor and whether $20 or $100 you can find Washington Cabernet Sauvignon that delivers.
  3. Each of these wines has a personality and story.
  4. They are available pretty much anywhere you buy good wine.

Barnard Griffin Cabernet Sauvignon

Barnard Griffin Columbia Valley Washington Cabernet Sauvignon $15

Lot of cheerful cherry and floral notes.  Bright, intensely fruity, youthful and easy to drink. If you want a Cabernet Sauvignon to sit around with friends and wait for the grill to heat, this is a great choice.  Rob Griffin has been making wine for 40 some odd years and it shows.

Find in Fred Meyer and New Seasons

Intrinsic Cabernet Sauvignon

Intrinsic Wine Co Cabernet Sauvignon $22

Find in major grocery stores

I love this Washington Cab so much.  It is blueberry and lavender and pretty.  The label, inspired from street art, is just like the wine alluring and approachable but complex.  Anyone could be proud to present this as a gift for a host.

For the geekier among you the reason this wine is unique for a Cabernet Sauvignon is they don’t use a lot of new oak and ferment some of the wine in cement.  And half the juice stays on the skins 9 months. It is just soaks up those really sultry fruit flavors.

Columbia Crest H3 Cabernet Sauvignon

H3 Cabernet Sauvignon from Columbia Crest $15

Find in major grocery stores.

I remember when I learned that H3 stood for Horse Heaven Hills I thought I uncovered the secret code.  Horse Heaven Hills is a region in Washington (around the town of Prosser)  that grows lovely cab. Something about the combination of the sun and wind there makes silky wines with fresh fruit.

I chose this wine for people who like that combination of fruit and oak.  It is raspberry, boysenberry and vanilla.   Big and juicy with some oaky flavors and a little sassafras on the finish. A very traditional style Cabernet and at unbelievable price.

Read more about what makes Horse Heaven Hills so special.

There are a couple of things that excite me about this post.

  1. I learned to make cauliflower rice and it was super easy, super tasty, and super delicious.
  2. I then added butternut squash, fava beans, and shrimp to make a fabulous cauliflower rice risotto full of veggies and protein.
  3. I get to tell you about Brandborg Gewurztraminer and a small Oregon AVA – Elkton.

Wendy Klik of A Day in the Life on the Farm is hosting this month’s #winepw and has asked us all to highlight lesser known American wine regions and make creative recipe pairings. So there are some cool links at the end of this article.

Cauliflower Rice

I may never make regular rice again.  Cauliflower rice is faster AND low carb – which means I can drink more wine!

Cauliflower Rice

All you have to do to make cauliflower rice is grate cauliflower with a cheese grater and cook it with a little bit of liquid in a skillet until it is tender – 5-7 minutes. You can use a special food processor blade but I don’t like to hand wash or hand dry and it took 2 minutes to hand grate.  Like think of how long it takes to grate a carrot and divide by 2. I do think using garden fresh cauliflower is tastier.

Cauliflower Rice

Cauliflower Rice Risotto

I wound up making my cauliflower rice into a risotto style because I also attempted to make butternut squash rice. I did not have much luck because it was soft and wet so the consistency was more like a fine mash. But it made the dish super creamy and decadent.  I topped with shrimp and fava beans making it almost like a cross between a risotto and paella.  Regardless of what you want to call it, it turned out delicious and packed with veggies and protein.

Cauliflower Rice Risotto

This Cauliflower Rice Risotto is naturally gluten free.  Omit the shrimp and it is also vegetarian/vegan.

Brandborg Vineyard and Winery Gewurztraminer

Brandborg Vineyard and Winery Gewurztraminer

The Brandborg Vineyard and Winery Gewurztraminer was a smidge sweet with lots of tropical and spice notes.  Melon, yellow mango, white lilaces, and sweet herb.  It matched the richness and flavors of the dish perfectly.

See also our Mushroom and Goat Cheese Stuffed Pastry with Brandborg Love Puppets Pinot Noir.

How does Oregon count as a lesser known wine region? Well I bet many of you have never had a Gewurtraminer from Oregon and may have never heard of the Elkton AVA.

Elkton AVA

Elkton is a small AVA that is part of Southern Oregon, about an hour south of Eugene.  Southern Oregon is usually thought of as warmer and drier than Willamette Valley, but Elkton is an exception.

  • Elkton averages 50+” rain per year (Willamette Valley averages 40-45ish”)
  • Elkton is only 142 ‘ above seal level and 33 miles to the coast. Therefore it gets a lot of wet cool  foggy coastal weather.

Looking for some wines to keep you refreshed and your party going this summer?  On warm days we want juicy mouthwatering wines with the crisp, fruity, floral flavors of summer. Here are three styles perfect for summer wines.

Because we live in Oregon we stuck with cool wines that are abundantly available here.  You can find these specific wines and these general grapes and styles anywhere.

We think a hallmark of a good summer wine is it can be enjoyed with or without food.  A porch swing, outdoor concert, or picnic summer wine should be as good paired with just a glass and friends as with a meal.

Check out our segment on KGW’s Portland Today and then keep reading for more details on these perfect for summer wines.  Y’all will have to forgive the fact that I am feverish in this video and have lost my voice – darn awful summer cold.

Summer Wines – Rose

While we think rose can be a year round wine, it comes into its own as a summer wine.  Just the array of colors reminds of summer gardens in full bloom.  We selected:

uck Pond Fries Family Cellars Rose of Pinot Noir

2017 Duck Pond Fries Family Cellars Rose of Pinot Noir Willamette Valley $20

Ballerina pink with light floral and and strawberry notes. Crisp, refreshing, citrusy and light.

See Rose Roundup for some other rose recommendations.

Summer Wines – Pinot Gris

We love pinot gris for summer wines because it is fruity and rich but still has refreshing acid.  While most made in Oregon fit this description, this grape can also be tart and citrusy.

Buyer’s Tip: If you want stone fruit and richness ask your wine steward for an Alsatian style Pinot Gris.  If you want tart and citrusy ask for an Italian style Pinot Gris aka Pinot Grigio.

We selected:

2017 Elk Cove Vineyards Pinot Gris Willamette Valley $19

Rich with stone fruit and melon.

Summer Wines – Pinot Noir

Red wine lovers, don’t despair!  You can have your summer wine and your red wine too!  Pinot Noir typically has less drying tannin than bigger reds like Cabernet Sauvignon.  This makes it much more sippable for summer.  If you find one that says “Whole Cluster” this will be lighter with fresher fruits and less tannin. It can even be served slightly chilled!

Buyer’s Tip: Pinot Noir is a good choice for a red summer wine. Even better, look for one that says “Whole Cluster” on the label.

We selected:

2017 Willamette Valley Vineyards Whole Cluster Pinot Noir Willamette Valley $24

Raspberry, cherry, vanilla, and juiciness.

What are some of your favorite summer wines?

Wanted to get this on your radar…Duck Pond Cellars is hosting their 25th Anniversary Dinner this Saturday July 14th. This is a line up of special bottles and pairings not to be missed. Read on for my discovery of the Pinot Gris mastery at Duck Pond Cellars and more details on this special event.

Duck Pond 25th Anniversary Celebration Dinner

I am becoming increasingly appreciative of Duck Pond Cellars.  You will see me talk about their rose later this week on KGW.  And we visited the tasting room in Dundee last weekend to discover they are masters at Pinot Gris.  Seriously.  I don’t get super excited about Pinot Gris.  Most around Oregon are pretty good.  Few blow my socks off.

They had a couple of extra bottles open the day we went so granted we tasted 4 Pinot Gris while the norm is 2 on the tasting flight.  But they were all sensory delights.  Complex, layered, textured, and hovering at the $20 price range.

These 2 were on the flight…

2016 Duck Pond Fries Family Cellars Pinot Gris St. Jory Vineyard

A sweet tart combination of lemon curd and lemon poundcake on the nose with fresh floral notes, a little grassiness, and roasted nuts.  The palate is rich but crisp with an undertone of baked yellow apple and pear, and spicy fresh ginger notes.

2016 Duck Pond Fries Family Cellars Pinot Gris South Salem Hills Cuvee

Lemongrass, kaffir lime, caramelized walnuts, apricot brulée, and tangy yeasty notes carry through to the palate which is round and inviting with mineral flavors.

And don’t even get me started on the special edition 25th Anniversary Pinot Gris which you will get to enjoy if you attend this dinner.

2017 Duck Pond Fries Family Cellars Pinot Gris 25th Anniversary

Fruit forward on the nose with pear, white peach, cantaloupe, and white floral notes.  The palate is mineral driven with a slippery mouth coating texture.  It remains crisp though with zesty honeydew flavored acidity and salted melon on the finish.  I can’t tell you how much I loved this wine.
